The science behind
digital visual protection
Since 2006, GUNNAR has developed and patented optical technologies designed to protect eyes from the short and long-term effects of prolonged screen exposure. A scientific approach, clinically validated and recognized by ophthalmologists.

Why screen strain your eyes
Prolonged screen exposure generates 4 distinct, cumulative and often underestimated types of eye stress.
Intensive screen use reduces blink rate by up to 60%, leaving the cornea exposed to ambient air. The result: accelerated evaporation of the tear film, causing irritation, burning and visual discomfort.
Focusing at a fixed, close distance continuously engages the ciliary muscles of the eye. Over long sessions, this unrelieved muscular tension generates headaches, blurred vision and deep eye fatigue.
Screens emit a peak of blue light around 450nm — a high-energy wavelength that penetrates to the retina, disrupts circadian rhythms and affects sleep quality.
Reflections from external light sources on lens surfaces create constant visual conflicts. The eye continuously attempts to compensate, generating additional invisible but real fatigue.
A technological response to every cause
Every component of GUNNAR eyewear has been designed to precisely address one of the four factors of digital eye fatigue.
Ocular Microclimate

Ocular Microclimate
Addresses: Dry Eyes
GUNNAR frames are designed with a pronounced wrap that creates a protective zone around the eye. This space reduces air circulation, maintains optimal humidity levels and protects the cornea from drying air currents. Models equipped with patented side shields — such as the Tallac — offer maximum protection for extreme dry eye cases.
Patented Focusing Power
Addresses: Muscular Strain
▸
Patented Focusing Power
Addresses: Muscular Strain
GUNNAR lenses incorporate a slight positive focusing power (+0.2 diopters by default) that allows the ciliary muscles to relax during extended sessions. Unlike standard glasses that offer no support for intermediate screen vision, GUNNAR lets the lenses do the work instead of your eyes.
Patented Spectral Filtration
Addresses: Blue Light
▸
Patented Spectral Filtration
Addresses: Blue Light
The GUNNAR BLUE LIGHT FILTER® (GBLF) was developed and patented to eliminate energy peaks emitted by backlit screens. Each lens tint has a certified and published filtration rate — from 20% for the Clear Pro tint to 98% for the Amber Max — allowing each user to choose the level of protection suited to their needs.
GSHIELD® Coatings
Addresses: Glare & Reflections
▸
GSHIELD® Coatings
Addresses: Glare & Reflections
GUNNAR lenses are treated with multi-layer GSHIELD® coatings: anti-reflective to eliminate reflections from external light sources, scratch-resistant for durability, oleophobic to repel fingerprints, and hydrophobic to evacuate moisture. Multiple performance levels available depending on the model.
Lens Tints
Choose the protection suited to your needs
GUNNAR publishes the exact filtration rate of each tint — the GBLF rating (GUNNAR Blue Light Filter) measured at 450nm, the emission peak of digital screens.
Clear Pro —
20% filtration
The most neutral tint in the range. Designed for professionals who need accurate color reproduction. Ideal for photo retouching, graphic design and video editing.
Clear —
35% filtration
A light transparent tint for those who want protection without noticeable visual alteration. Suited for office work, graphic design and editing.
Amber —
65% filtration
The most popular tint in the range. Offers an optimal balance between protection and everyday visual comfort. Recommended for versatile use — work, gaming, extended reading.
Amber Max —
98% filtration
Extreme protection for cases of photosensitivity, migraine management, sleep disorders or post-concussion protocols. Therapeutic use recommended.
Sun —
90% filtration
Designed for outdoor use with digital devices. Maximum protection against blue light and UV in bright environments.
GBLF Rating: GBLF (GUNNAR Blue Light Filter) rating measures the percentage of blue light blocked at 450nm — the primary emission peak of digitally backlit screens. All ratings are independently verified. A higher GBLF rating indicates stronger blue light filtration.
Lens quality is also about the surface
The best lenses are useless without quality coatings.
GUNNAR's GSHIELD® coatings are developed specifically for digital environments.
Anti-Reflective
Reduces reflections and glare generated by external light sources — ceiling lights, windows, desk lamps. Fewer visual conflicts, less fatigue.
Scratch-Resistant
A hardened surface treatment that resists everyday micro-scratches and extends lens lifespan.
Oleophobic
Repels skin oils and reduces fingerprints and smudges on lenses. The surface stays clean longer.
Hydrophobic
Repels water and moisture — droplets form and slide off without spreading across the lens surface.
Clinical studies & medical validation
Clinically tested, recommended by ophthalmologists
GUNNAR technology does not rely on marketing claims. It is validated by independent studies and supported by the medical community.
The clinical study
Clinical studies have shown that blue light exposure can contribute to digital eye strain. GUNNAR lenses are specifically designed to reduce blue light transmission and minimize glare, helping to alleviate discomfort during extended screen time.
Our advanced lens technology filters harmful blue light while maintaining color accuracy and visual clarity, making them ideal for professionals and gamers who spend hours in front of screens.

What the American Optometric Association says
Digital eye strain is recognized as a growing public health issue. The average American spends seven hours a day in front of a screen — at the office and at home. The level of discomfort increases proportionally with exposure time.
Recommended by specialists
"GUNNAR lenses are an excellent solution for anyone experiencing digital eye strain. The combination of blue light filtering and anti-glare technology provides measurable relief during extended screen exposure."

Why technology matters
Not all blue light glasses are equal. Optical design, coating quality and scientific rigor make a real difference in the protection of your eyes.
What sets GUNNAR apart
Registered patents
GUNNAR technology is protected by patents covering lens design, frame curvature and spectral filtration. Not an imitation — the original.
